With the popular Football Escapes camp returning to the pitch in May and August, we caught up with sporting legend and Football Escapes ambassador, Rio Ferdinand, to learn more about his role and what he enjoys most about the camp.
Hi Rio, where did you first hear about Football Escapes?
I first heard about Football Escapes when Bobby Zamora and Sam [the Director] spoke to me about it. I loved the idea, having children myself, and being able to share my passion for football and travel meant it was a no-brainer to get involved!
What made you want to become an ambassador? What does being an ambassador involve?
I have football-mad children who are always looking to kick a football around and meet new friends on holiday, so it was the perfect opportunity to get involved. My role as an ambassador is essentially to pass my knowledge of football to the kids. But most importantly, it’s about making sure the kids have fun and go home having learnt something new.
What is your favourite thing about the Football Escapes camps?
The camps are so much fun – seeing the smiles on faces and the reactions of the kids is what it’s all about. Also, the way the families and kids interact with each other is great to see. There is a real sense of community created during these camps at The Grove, with the families all meeting up in the evenings – usually at The Glasshouse.
Can you share any advice for children who want to progress in football?
The advice I would give any young footballer is to work hard and listen to your coaches.
Have there been any memorable/stand-out moments from the camps over the years?
We have had so many I don’t where to start! Seeing kids keep coming back and recognising the same families at different locations is great. We have made some really special memories with the families.
While the kids are honing their skills at the camp, where would you recommend as your favourite spot to unwind at The Grove as a parent?
I love The Glasshouse, but whilst the kids are busy playing football I’d recommend taking some proper, child-free time out in the spa or on the championship golf course.
