We’ve teamed up with lifestyle influencer and mum-of-two Rebecca Sterling to uncover the very best local spots. From village days out to hidden woodland trails, this is your go-to guide for making the most of your stay at The Grove, both on and off the estate.

What’s your favourite family-friendly place to visit in Hertfordshire and what makes it special?

Berkhamsted is where we go time and time again. On a Saturday morning there’s a market that feels like you could be in Europe. Our children love a trip to Berkhamsted bookshop which has the most magical children’s section. We pick up croissants and babyccinos from Nena Craft bakery, then head to the recently refurbished Canal Field’s playground.

Best outdoor space for burning off energy and why do you love it?

Cassiobury Park. We walk down through Whippendell woods, just across the road from The Grove’s golf course, and the kid’s ride their bikes or scooters. Cassiobury Park has so much space for kids to run, cycle, scoot or play in one of the playgrounds which work for all ages. There’s also a splash park (make sure you book in advance for that one), lovely nature walks across little bridges into the reserves and a miniature railway. If you do have bike-loving kids, don’t miss Watford Cycle Hub for teaching children cycling proficiency in a mini town.

What dining moment hit the mark for your family at The Grove?

The Glasshouse for us can never be beaten, it’s just the dream buffet and we can’t get over the sushi, Indian section, roasts and impressive desserts. It’s always a great option with kids too as they can choose exactly what they want as well as getting to try lots of new exciting foods (and they’ll go mad for the chocolate fountain).

Any scenic walks or picnic spots you would recommend for families?

The River Chess in Sarratt is just idyllic. You can park either in a lay-by at the bottom of the hill in Sarratt or at Chorleywood House and follow the well-trodden paths through the fields to a little stream where kids can fish.

Are there any outdoor activities or experiences in Hertfordshire your kids ask to do again and again?

We go to Stanborough Lakes near Welwyn Garden City every summer when it’s hot to visit Splashlands. It’s the best splash park in Hertfordshire with a pirate ship playground, a river to paddle in, high ropes climbing course, and you can hire a flamingo or unicorn pedalo on the lake which is always fun.

Do you recommend any local farm shops, tearooms or bakeries?

Bagels + Schmear is a must-visit if you want really chewy NYC style bagels that are made right in front of you. It’s part of Battler’s Green Farm which is always worth a visit for farm supplies and boutiques. Nearby there’s a gorgeous walk right across the runway at Elstree aerodrome which is amazing for watching planes & helicopters practicing their take offs and landings, or you can combine it with a visit to Aldenham country park

What would you suggest for a family visiting The Grove for the first time?

Stay for as long as possible because there’s so much fun to be had. The schedule of family-friendly events for every season is so impressive and they really cater for all ages so be sure to explore everything on offer. And lastly, don’t miss the musical trail in the woods
