  1. Place the red wine in a large saucepan and put on a medium-high heat.
  2. Add the star anise, cinnamon stick, white cloves and orange slice to the pan and bring to the boil.
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat and allow to simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring often.
  4. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 30 minutes. This will ensure the spices are infused into the wine.
  5. When you are ready to serve, put the pan back on a low heat to warm the wine through, add the sugar syrup and then serve.
