The Grove highlights of 2019
16 December 2019 / Lifestyle /
Before we throw ourselves into 2020, we’re taking a fond look at all the exciting events, pop-ups and achievements at The Grove in 2019… here are some of our favourites.
1. Colette’s Winter Pop-up
We started the year with a gorgeous pop-up restaurant in Colette’s, the charming, sleek space in the heart of The Grove’s 18th Century Mansion. The menu featured simple sharing dishes showcasing fresh and seasonal ingredients, many picked daily just yards away in our very own Kitchen Garden.
2. The Glasshouse relaunched!
The Glasshouse restaurant was re-opened in May with a striking new glass extension serving up exquisite garden views. Beneath shimmering sculptures, guests pick and choose from eight bountiful live-action food stations. Our Executive Chef, Stephen Wheeler, devised this innovative dining experience following the inspirational, buzzy food-hall style dining he experienced in Asia. With endless variety, and the freedom to keep going back for more, we never get bored of this theatrical feast.
3. Recognition by some of the best travel publications
We were delighted to scoop the major award, ‘Best Hotel for Families’ in the Conde Nast Johansens‘ Awards for Excellence 2020. The Grove was also voted one of the best hotels in the UK by Conde Nast Traveller readers in their Readers Choice Awards 2019. To be recognised by both the publication and their readers is very special.
4. Secret Garden Cinema in collaboration with Everyman
The star of the summer was our Everyman Secret Garden Cinema pop-up. We spent sunny afternoons and starlit nights sitting on comfy beanbags in our beautiful Walled Garden, watching fantastic films. In 2020 we’re thrilled to be collaborating with Everyman again… watch this space!
5. We scooped a Green Apple Environment Award
We set up our ‘Green Team’ in 2018 to minimise our environmental impact and become more sustainable. So we were delighted to receive a Silver Green Apple Award, recognising our efforts to date. Actions include reducing single-use plastic throughout the hotel by switching to biodegradable paper straws and replacing plastic stirrers with bamboo. Our on-going partnership with the charities New Hope Trust and Clean the World will bring more improvements.
6. Potting Shed Pop-up restaurant
With it’s rustic, quirky and ‘instagrammable’ aesthetics, we couldn’t leave The Potting Shed pop-up restaurant off our 2019 highlights. Meat dishes were cooked to perfection using our outdoor wood-fired grill. Super-fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs were handpicked from the neighbouring Kitchen Garden, which thrives under the watchful eye of our head gardener, Natasha Geldenhuys. The ultimate relaxed, summer dining experience.
7. We hosted the world leaders for our biggest event yet
At the very end of 2019, we were proud to host the NATO leaders meeting. Our whole team pulled together for this up-scale event that transformed the hotel and placed The Grove in the global spotlight. It was an amazing day that showcased our capabilities.
8. The Golf Shop makeover
The Golf Shop had a refresh and is looking better than ever, showcasing our range of quality brands. Next time you’re in for a round, don’t forget to pop in for any accessories or clothing you need, from bags to clubs.
9. Kirsty MacCormick joined Sequoia as Spa Director
We were delighted to welcome Kirsty to The Grove. She leads our team at Sequoia and brings 25 years’ experience in the wellness industry, working for other prestigious destinations such as the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in Beijing and Tokyo, Hilton and Kohler. She also developed her own nail salon brand, The Nail Yard, in Edinburgh.
10. A wealth of press coverage
We were mentioned by some top publications and included in many round-ups including…‘8 of the best boltholes near London for a weekend away‘ by The Independent, ‘30 best hotels in the UK to book for summer 2019‘ by The Times, ‘12 of the best English country hotels‘ by Net-a-Porter and ‘22 of the best UK spa hotels‘ by Harpers Bazaar.
Here’s to 2020! With our upcoming refurbishments, we believe it’s going to be an even better year.
